Alan Schmidt - 'The Holly and The Ivy' Framed Picture
The origin of the Marian Cypher - AMR – representing ‘Ave Maria Regina’ – is a minor masterpiece of medieval design. Although surviving in many slightly different forms - painted, engraved and wrought in metal - the fine example upon which this painting is based can be seen built into the flint-work of Wymondham Abbey, Norfolk.
The text is an extract from the well-loved carol ‘The Holly and the Ivy’, and here both the crown traditionally found atop the letters and the foliated border have been designed to graphically echo the motifs of the title.
This lovely framed picture measures around 19 1/2" x 14 3/4".
