Alan Schmidt - 'Pilgrim' Framed Picture

Whilst still at the design and layout stage of this painting, I made a long-desired visit to the astonishing French Cathedral of Chartres.

Experiencing the scale and sheer magnificence of its world-famous stained glass windows - the age of the earliest approaching a thousand years – marked a cross-roads in my work. The saturated colours focused and delineated by the structural grey/black lead-work that holds them have provided me with a whole new graphic and colourist approach.

The central image of The Annunciation is taken from a 14th c. carving in elephant ivory now held by the British Museum, architectural elements are drawn from Magdalen College, Oxford, and the letter forms and decorative elements from a variety of medieval glass and mss.sources.
